Isle of Skye: Day One Itinerary

First of all, have I said enough how stunning Scotland is? A road trip through this country is about all I ever dreamed of. We drove from Inverness to the Isle of Skye, a drive straight through that’s only supposed to be about three hours. Between all the stopping we did, it took at least five!

BUT we were super lucky! When we booked our trip, we didn’t know I would be pregnant by the time we went! So we had planned to take a ferry up to the Isle of Lewis, then another ferry to the Isle of Skye. My tummy was not going to let that happen. And seriously the day before we were supposed to get on the boat, we decided to look for some places to stay on the Isle of Skye instead. I think we found the last room on the whole entire island. Everything was booked! We found ourselves booking an extra night in the prettiest place I’ve ever seen. I’m sure the Isle of Lewis and Harris are so gorgeous and I’d love to still go one day! But not while six weeks pregnant I guess!!

Day One on the Isle of Skye

The drive to Skye

The drive was so gorgeous, I wish these pictures captured the feeling of sheer amazement every twist and turn brought. If the Isle of Skye is not on your bucket list, you definitely need to be adding it. Here are some of my favorite shots from our drive to the Isle of Skye! Driving over the Skye Bridge, singing “The Skye Boat Song” (Outlander, anyone?) was kind of surreal. But I’m so so so happy we made it up to Skye!

First glimpses of the Isle of Skye

I could not have been more happy or pleased to find myself feeding and petting a Highland Cow! These are the cutest creatures imaginable!!! Photographing and petting some were pretty high on my list of things I wanted to do on the trip! I loved every second of that and squealed every single time I saw one in Scotland!!

I loved all the little white houses on the Isle of Skye. It made everything so quaint and pretty and clean! And speaking of quaint, so many adorable sheep all over the place, all over the road, it was really picturesque!

Neist Point Lighthouse

Neist Point Lighthouse was really worth the stop. It was maybe a little bit cold on the cliff tops! But it was awesome! A piece of advice for Scotland, even in the summer, is to bring boots! Dave didn’t have any, so I walked up alone to see the sunset over the lighthouse because it was really muddy, while he flew the drone from the car. I didn’t mind it though. It was really peaceful. We got there right in time to see the sunset and enjoy the scenery. But not enough time to make it all the way down. I felt ok about it though, I don’t feel like we missed out on much.

Where we stayed

No one is luckier than me, I tell ya. We searched TripAdvisor, Airbnb, hotels.com and not only was everything really expensive, but it was all sold out too! Except for Clach Ghlas Bnb. We got this 5 star BnB for a steal of a deal the day before we stayed in it, and we lived to tell the tale! We booked most of our stay in May or June because we knew it’d be busy, and even by that point a lot of places were out of our budget or just sold out!

The owner was so happy we booked it, she had a last minute cancellation and she thought she’d just lose the night! But the Hirschi’s came through for her! It was absolutely stunning, both inside and out. The bed was huge and comfortable, my only regret was that I wasn’t allowed to take hot baths at that stage of my pregnancy. We could see a waterfall from our balcony, yes our own balcony, the island off the coast was home to some seals, sheep littered the driveway, and it was only a couple of miles from the lighthouse!

Here’s what our itinerary looked like on this day!
